We are Tulgey Beat
Tulgey Beat is a seven-piece genre-mashing groove machine based in Berlin. Tulgey Beat pulls together influences from across the globe - including jazz, afrobeat, and rock. The band is made up of some of the top musicians in Berlin's rich and international musical community. We specialise in original dance-floor filling songs, clashing and mutating influences to bring a fresh and powerful sound.
Bio
Or Rozenfeld (Bass) and George Birkett (Guitar), like many in Berlin, met at a jam session and connected personally and musically. George had long wanted to form an Afro-style ensemble, influenced by his experiences in the UK. Or wished to have an ensemble to play his compositions with a large, loud group incorporating world music elements.

At the end of 2019, just before the pandemic, Or and George began composing the first tunes of the band, which were recorded in the First EP (WhatsFISH) the band released. They started playing regularly with drummer Nir Sabag (Jembaa Groove), who later because of the rise of his band, made way for the current drummer, Liliana Zieniawa (drums, Poland). They gradually added members: Kelly O'Donohue (trumpet, Australia), Henry Weekes (tenor sax, UK), Leonie Freudenberger (baritone sax, Germany) and Petros Tzekos (percussion, Greece). The goal was to create a large ensemble with a harmonizing horn section and a strong rhythm section.

Initially named WhatsFISH, they performed under this name before changing it to Tulgey Beat while working on their debut album, "Out of Context" (2024). The name change aimed to project mystery and activate the imagination of the listeners. "Tulgey" is an invented word by Lewis Carroll (Alice in Wonderland, 1865), meaning thick, dense, or dark, often referring to a forest. Combined with the word "Beat”, it emphasizes the band's rhythmic elements with a touch of mystery.

The band has performed numerous times, including the Badehaus Berlin, Quasimodo, Haus der Statistik with Souljam production, Rotenburger Jazz Club in Rotenberg Jazz in Gulfhaus in Vechta and many more . One of their major performances was at PANKE, an event they organized and sold out all 220 tickets. Another significant event was their guest performance at SOFAR Berlin in 2024.
In 2024, the band focused on producing their album, "Out of Context," released on vinyl with cover art by Brazil-based artist Amelie Tavernier. The album was recorded, mixed, and mastered by Marian Hafenstein at Possible Studios, Berlin. The release event was at Sonnenraum in Berlin on 11.10.2024. In 2025, the band plans a tour to promote the album, hoping to reach thousands of new listeners and introduce them to the unique sound of Tulgey Beat.
